Why Do Teachers Need Work From Home, Part-Time Jobs?
One common misconception about teaching is that we have plenty of extra time because of summers and holidays off. But as we teachers know, our teaching work is a year-round commitment. Even when we’re not in the classroom, we’re:
- Planning lessons
- Grading assignments
- Communicating with parents
- AND MORE!
Sadly, all that extra hard work often goes unpaid. Currently, teacher salaries still don’t reflect the countless hours we put in, which is why many teachers are turning to work-from-home part-time jobs—not just in the summer, but year-round.
Work-from-home jobs are perfect for teachers who:
- Need to supplement their income
- Want more financial stability
- Are looking for flexible work that fits around their teaching schedule
Whether you’re hoping to make extra money during the school year, on weekends, or during holiday breaks, I’ve got you covered! Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite work-from-home part-time jobs that are ideal for teachers.
Online Work From Home Teaching Jobs for Teachers
One of the first work from home, part-time jobs for teachers involves work that we do everyday anyway–teaching!
Teaching online is by far my favorite way to make money from home as a teacher. In fact, I did this from 2017 to 2020.
Many online teaching platforms exist. Here are some examples:
- VIPKid
- VIPTeacher
- Online Adjunct Community College Professor in your area
- Pearson Virtual Schools
- Kaplan Tutoring
You should also check for K-12 online teaching jobs with your district. After 2020, many schools continued and expanded their online classes for students and teachers who were better served with that teaching model.
Does VIPKid Still Exist?
Yes! They temporarily stopped hiring teachers outside of China due to government restrictions. So, they relocated from China to Singapore and rebranded in 2022.
They are now also known as VIPTeacher, which is also linked above. The good thing about this rebranding is that you can now find work from home teacher jobs for tutoring online and curriculum work or teacher training.
I taught with VIPKid and enjoyed the flexibility + the pay. The major downside is that I worked from 4:00am-9:00am EST during the summer and holiday breaks. This was temporary for me so that I could meet some previous financial goals faster, but it allowed me to work from home doing something I am already certified to do.
Online Tutoring as a Freelance Teacher
Not only can you work with a company or district to teach online, but you can also set up your own teaching schedule and set your own prices. Just start advertising in your community by posting flyers around your public library, church, or neighborhood.
There are also community boards at places like Barnes & Noble and 2nd & Charles that allow you to advertise your tutoring services.
Once you start getting students to tutor, use Zoom or Google Meet to teach them virtually. Another tool that will help you organize your workflow is Google Calendar, where you can direct parents to sign up for your teaching / tutoring slots!
Calendly is also amazing at helping you schedule your teaching appointments!
(No affiliate endorsement for any of these: I just think each service is wonderful!)

Selling Online Teaching Resources
The second work from home job for teachers taps into your creative side: selling teaching resources online.
Let’s face it, you are already making so many things for the students in your classroom anyway, right?
Here’s a quick poll…how many of the following things have you created for use to supplement learning in your class:
- Quizzes and Tests
- Forms to fill out for Parents
- Open House Slideshow and Brochure
- Games and Hands-on Activities
- Worksheets that align to a certain standard that your school’s chosen curriculum didn’t provide
- Letters to Parents
- Surveys
Do I really need to keep going? As teachers, we seem to always be designing and tweaking materials to meet our students’ needs.
So why not package those babies up and sell them to other teachers that would want them? Yes, it can be done and money can be made from it!
You have options for how to begin:
- Teachers Pay Teachers
- Set up a shop on your own website
- Etsy
Just like with online teaching, selling resources online has its ups and downs. Here are my issues with selling resources online:
- The money varies: Don’t expect to become a millionaire overnight and have the exact same amount of money flowing in every single month.
- You aren’t getting paid while you are creating the resource. All the money you make comes after the product is completed and posted for sale. Think of a writer creating a book–the write gets paid once the book is complete.
- You need to market your resources. Even after product creation, you need to advertise to get sales.
I include this as one of the work from home jobs for teachers because it offers amazing long-term passive income when you work it consistently.

Is It Worth It to Sell Teaching Resources Online?
Building passive income takes time, but pays off tremendously!
Once the upfront work is done, and you’ve marketed your work, you can continue passively making money from that source over and over again.
Plus, it feels great knowing that you made something which helps other teachers and students.
Grading Standardized Testing
My third category of work from home, part-time jobs for teachers requires your focused teacher expertise: grading student work from standardized testing.
I know, I know…we are working hard to save time grading our own students’ work so who wants to spend extra time grading other students’ work?
For two summers, I worked with Pearson to grade fifth grade writing while working from my home. I only worked for Pearson, but just like with the first two options listed above, there are other platforms you can pursue.
Working from Home for Pearson
Pearson provides very thorough training and the best part is that I got paid during the training. Here are other details from this option that are helpful to know:
- The pay (with Pearson) during 2019 ranged from $10-$12 an hour for my area. Check their site for updated salaries and to see if the rate is different based on where you live.
- You must work a certain number of hours a week to maintain employment: so although you get to choose the hours you work, you still need to meet your weekly quota of work time.
- The grading requires an online connection and obviously a computer or tablet for access.
Although I deeply appreciated working this option–and would do it again–I only did it for those two summers.
So if you think you’d be interested in this option, check out Pearson’s page here for more info.
(By the way, for transparency’s sake, I am NOT being paid to recommend Pearson. I continue to mention them because they are the company I worked for and am familiar with.)
Working as a Virtual Assistant
Working as an at home Virtual Assistant (VA) is another great work option for teachers who want to make money from home.
Many of us are expert multi-taskers anyway and can do many administrative tasks that others need help with.

Here are some possible things you can do as a teacher VA:
- Typing Documents, Dissertations, Etc. (check out these typing jobs on Upwork)
- Researching for Others
- Email Maintenance
- Social Media Marketing
- Designing Pinterest Pins
- Captioning
- Digital Organization
- Editing and Proofreading (work that I’ve also done for others)
- Creating Product Covers for Others’ Digital Resources
- Basically…any online work that you are good at doing!!
This sky is the limit here!
Yet, working as a VA does require that you market your services well.
I once worked for a writer editing and proofreading his book and I LOVED IT! We connected through a Facebook group for virtual assistants.
He sent me his work through Google Docs. I made corrections and recommendations in red for him (just like grading student writing). Then he paid me through PayPal based on the service terms we established together.
Boom. Badda. Bing!

I have an Associate Degree. And have been an Aide and Substitute Teacher for 20 years. I’m looking for a legitimate work from home position because of a disability. Can you suggest any websites?
$10-$12 per hour???? Minimum wage in CA for fast workers is $20/ hour.
Elise,
Thanks for pointing this out about Pearson. That was the pay range during 2019, so please be sure to check with their site for updated salaries, especially based on where you live.
Love this! Thank you for sharing such an insightful article!
If you are a stay at home mom and you have a bachelors degree VIPKID may have the perfect job for you!
Make between $14-$22 per hour!
I am a stay-at-home mother of two little girls. In order to be able to work from home I needed something that was flexible. You open up slots according to what times you are available to teach. Students then can book you for those time slots. YOU CONTROL YOUR SCHEDULE. Also the slots are available from 7pm- 7am MST. I work before my kids are awake or after they go to bed.
I absolutely love working for VIPKID.
Katherine!

Yes, you sure can Olivia. There are many teachers who choose to work up to 40 hours a week teaching from home.
