What is Prime Day & Why the Hype Over It?

Prime Day comes dancing our way each year around early to mid-July. Amazon has already released a statement that there will be another fall event this October, which is right around the corner. The specific October 2024 dates have not been revealed yet, but we’ll know very soon.

It’s 36 hours where tons of deals are up for grabs–to everyone!

In order to score these Prime Day deals, teachers must be a Prime member. The current membership price is $139 a year. So it is truly worth it to shop for deals on Prime Day as a teacher PLUS pay an annual membership fee???

Is Amazon Prime FREE for Teachers?

Right away, let’s clear up the #1 myth about Amazon Prime Membership: it is NOT free for teachers!

However, there are awesome discounts on the Prime membership that you may be eligible for as a teacher. Check out these offers for discounts on the Prime membership cost:

  • Amazon Young Adult (formerly Prime Student): If you have an .edu email address or you are pursuing any degree, you may qualify for the deep membership discount on this program.

  • $5.99 Monthly Discounted Prime Program: Based on your income, you could receive the wonderful benefits of Prime for only $5.99 a month!

  • You can also score a FREE 30 Day Trial of Prime in order to take advantage of the new 2024 Prime Day deals.

Do Teachers Get a Discount on Amazon Prime?

As a teacher who has been a Prime member for years, I must also sadly say no to this question 🥺. But just because Amazon doesn’t give a discount to teachers directly, that doesn’t mean you can’t save on a Prime membership. Here are some options for you:

  • Add Amazon Gift Cards to your wish-list for parents during Open House or Parent-Teacher conferences.
  • If you are a teacher going back to school, consider applying for the Prime Young Adult program mentioned above.
  • Set up a Prime Family Account with the people you live with. This could be your spouse / partner, roommates, children, etc.

Hopefully these hacks will help you secure savings on a Prime membership, because you definitely want to be a Prime member when the deals day rolls around. As you see below, here are all the good reasons why! 👇🏾

FREE Grubhub+ Membership with Prime

Another benefit I enjoy as a Prime member is free Grubhub+.

I will admit, having food delivered to my house has me spoiled! The convenience is well worth the price.

With this deal, your $9.99 fee is waived, which means you save $120 on deliveries throughout the year. I also love the additional discounts that Grubhub occasionally gives for certain meals or restaurants.

Of course you still have to pay for the actual food + a good tip for your driver, but not having to pay the membership fee is a really sweet deal.

Saving Money on Books with Kindle Unlimited

Hands-down the best perk in my opinion are the book programs through Amazon. Yep, you can tell I’m an ELA teacher. 📚 I’ve used Audible, Amazon Kids+, and Kindle Unlimited for years in my classroom and at home with my son.

We check out books digitally and use any device that has the Kindle app on it. I also like displaying books on my Smartboard during whole class read-aloud time. You save hundreds on books and magazines with this subscription.

And if you’re wondering about choosing between physical books vs. e-books, the answer is BOTH. Research shows that it’s ok for kids to read using both types of books depending on the situation in which the book is being used. Although Kindle Unlimited only offers e-books, you will still use physical books along with it in your classroom and home.

Perks for Having Amazon Prime Membership as a Teacher

If there’s a chance that shopping on Prime Day isn’t worth it for teachers, why pay such a hefty membership fee?

For me, I don’t keep the Prime membership just to shop for Prime Day deals. There are SO many other perks that teachers will enjoy all year long:

  • Getting FREE 2-Day shipping on classroom books and supplies and even things you need or want for your home.

  • I get to steam tons of tv shows and movies for no additional cost. This really comes in handy when we want to watch the movie version of our favorite novels.

  • Prime Wardrobe allows you to try on clothes before buy them. Here’s looking at you cute teacher t-shirts!

Even More Amazon Prime Day Deals for 2024

Now that Amazon has confirmed Prime Day for October for 2024, what are the best deals for teachers?

So far, based on my deal-hunting, the best Prime Day deals this year are:

  • Home office essentials like this comfy chair!
  • Small kitchen appliances like my favorite air fryer HERE that make meal prep easier.
  • My favorite online book service: Kindle Unlimited: you get 50% OFF on a 6-month subscription here.
  • Portable Crockpot for your school lunches. This thing is AMAZING! You can save so much money taking your lunch to school. But it really helps when your lunch is yummy and hot!

Subscription Boxes: Bundle Deals from Amazon

Another new favorite for me is the subscription box deals for 2024.

Not only can you find cute and gift-able boxes, but you can also find several subscription boxes for yourself.

Most of the boxes I found offer $100+ worth of merchandise for a pretty low starting price.

The latest topics offered include:

You can even get subscription boxes for your pets, plant lovers, or gifts for your teacher friends.

Bonus Tips for Saving Money on Amazon

Hopefully, you will find awesome Prime day deals this year, but if not, you can still save money by shopping on Amazon. Here are some tips to get you started:

  • Getting grocery delivery service through Amazon Fresh or Amazon Pantry, which is a BIG TIME game changer!

  • Follow me on my Amazon shop as I share Live videos during Prime Day this year for teachers! That allows you to see deals happening in real time to get the biggest savings on things that matter to you.

  • If you own a business, you can set an Amazon Business account that makes purchasing office supplies and other needed items much easier.

  • Create a Wish List of things you’d like for your classroom. When the price of those items drops, Amazon will alert you of the deal.
