These St. Patrick’s Day spelling activities and word work centers for March help 3rd-5th grade students practice applying different spelling rules to words in context. It also allows you to use this spelling activity for any list or set of spelling rules you are teaching.

These St. Patrick’s Day spelling activities come with a Google Forms version for virtual learning!

✅Each “Shamrock Spelling” task card contains:

• A spelling rule
• A base word
• A fill-in-the-blank sentence

✅The main goal of this resource is to help students learn to spell words based on their spelling rules. That way, students aren’t just memorizing a list of spelling words but applying spelling rules to all words within a rule’s category.

Here are the spelling rules included in this resource:

• Adding “es” to words that end with –ch, -sh, -s, -x, or –z (ex. buses)
• Dropping the “y” and adding an “i,” then “es” to words that have a consonant before the y. (ex. babies)
• Keeping the “y” and adding “s” to words that have a vowel before the y.
  (ex. monkeys)
• Dropping the “f” at the end of words to add “-ves” (ex. elves)

✅With this spelling activity, your students aren’t just spelling words based on their spelling rules, but they are also applying the word to sentences, which gives them extra practice with skills such as subject-verb agreement, reading context clues to apply the correct word, nouns vs. verb use, etc.
